The wing positions (Head Linesman and Line Judge) are critical to successful crew performance. The wings mark forward progress most of the time, they blow their whistles more than all other officials combined, and their correct movement near the line-to-gain and goal line is critical to mark the accurate dead-ball location near the “money lines.” If you master these lesson guidelines, you’ll greatly improve your ability as a wing.

The Official’s Whistle
Officials blow the whistle to indicate the ball is dead “by rule.” There is a right way to blow the whistle following a “typical” play so everyone can hear it. We also blow a “look at me!” whistle during specific circumstances. We’ll discuss the finger and lanyard whistle types, when we blow the whistle, and how we blow the whistle.
